“Matthew "Doc" Dunn is a renowned name in underground music circles. From his hometown of Toronto, the polymath multi-instrumentalist has produced a prolific body of work spanning solo releases and collaborations with Jennifer Castle, Kevin Morby, Sunburned Hand of the Man, Woods, and many more. As a member of Matt Valentine and Erika Elder’s (MV & EE) band The Golden Road, Dunn toured the globe while appearing on countless recordings. This led to the formation of his instrumental ensemble The Cosmic Range (featuring members from projects as diverse as Lido Pimienta, DIANA, and John Zorn), who have recently earned widespread critical acclaim for their work as U.S. Girls’ backing band on her 2018 album, In A Poem Unlimited. While possibly best known for his wordless experimentation, Dunn’s parallel talents as a singer-songwriter are revealed in all of their glory on his latest solo album, Lightbourn. This long-percolating collection of love songs and laments hearkens back to his childhood inspirations from the catalogues of Gene Clark, Bob Dylan, and Joni Mitchell. Dunn’s singing floats softly and sweetly to the forefront, with additional vocals from celebrated Toronto musician Isla Craig and the unmistakable sound of U.S. Girls’ Meg Remy. Following in the giant footsteps of Todd Rundgren and Prince, these songs are soundtracked by an astonishing one-man band performance on a studio’s worth of instruments: six and 12-string acoustic guitars, slides, wailing solos, drums, bass, organ, electric piano, and shimmering vibraphone.” - Jesse Locke
